Grassroots Liaison Program

ADVOCATE: -n One who supports or defends a cause, or one who pleads on another’s behalf.

One of the most effective ways to improve and protect the legislative and regulatory environment for credit unions is utilizing legislative advocacy on their behalf. Quite simply, this means supporting laws and policies that are good for credit unions, and opposing ones that are not.

Advocacy can be both fun and easy. Though the topics and issues credit unions deal with are important and sometimes complicated, the staff at GCUA does its best to make your job as an advocate as simple and effective as possible.

What is the Grassroots Liaison Program?
The GCUA Grassroots Liaison Program is designed to get a key leadership person or persons at every credit union to educate, mobilize (when needed), and inspire their credit union co-workers, volunteers and even members to work together to help protect the interests of credit unions.

How can I be a part of the team?
Check with your credit union CEO and make sure your credit union is part of the program. Volunteer to share information your credit union circle of influence when needed. Grassroots Liaisons are asked to tell other credit union loyalists about issues that impact credit unions to increase awareness and support.

How will Liaisons know what to do?

  • GCUA staff will keep liaisons informed of issues that affect credit unions.
  • GCUA staff will provide liaisons with tools needed to share with credit unions loyalists – sample letters, briefing sheets and message points.
  • When the Grassroots Liaisons are called upon to mobilize on an issue, your voice and those of your co-workers is needed! Liaisons will be notified by fax, e-mail or mail and given clear, brief background information and instructions on how you can help – either by writing a letter to your legislator or newspaper, making a quick phone call, or sharing information or stories with GCUA.
  • To keep liaisons educated on legislative issues, liaisons will receive the Creating Influence e-newsletter – a helpful resource to stay informed on legislative topics, issues and challenges on both the state and federal level.

What will Liaisons ask of their co-workers?

  • To write a letter to their legislator if a bill that has an impact on credit unions is introduced and credit unions need to generate support.
  • If credit unions are under attack, liaisons might ask co-workers to place a phone call to their legislator and/or solicit help from others at your credit union in placing phone calls to legislators. A sample script will be provided.
  • Attend a rally with fellow credit union advocates to demonstrate support to legislators.
  • Inform others about an issue to increase awareness and support.
